About this site
Free Character Counter is a small, independent tool for anyone who writes against a limit: a post, a caption, an SMS, a title tag, an abstract. It was built with one idea: the number on screen should be the one the destination will use.
What makes it different
- Exact counts. Emoji, accented letters and Asian scripts are counted with the Unicode rules built into your browser, and platforms with special rules (X's weighted count, Bluesky's visible characters, SMS encodings, pixel widths for Google) get their own calculation.
- Private by design. The text never leaves your device. There is no server-side processing, no analytics, no cookies and no third-party code.
- Light. The whole page weighs a few dozen kilobytes and works on any recent browser, including on a slow connection.
How the counts are made
Each page explains its method and its sources: see the character counter, the word counter, the X counter, the SMS counter and the title and meta description checker. Where a platform does not document its rules, the page says so.
Report a mistake
Platforms change their limits. If you notice a count that differs from what a site shows, write to contact@free-character-counter.com with the text (or a description of it) and the platform. Corrections are published as quickly as possible.
